Devotion

Devotion is a mixed-media abstract cubism sculpture. The sculpture presents a non-binary body with a crochet heart hanging from a hole in the upper body section. ‘Devotion’ was inspired by two of the seven types of love in Greek philosophy that I researched for my Year 11 Unit 2 studio art studies. The first is Storge which is described as unconditional familial love and the second is Pragma which develops from a new flirtatious love to a committed companionate love. ‘Devotion’ physically represents a hole and a sense of emptiness that the viewer can reflect upon, interpret and relate to their own experience of love being taken away and passion being crushed. ‘Devotion’ also offers the viewer a sense of hope from the heart still being there and that it can grow and become stronger from what has been taken.
